I need to tell every family who has a child in the school district- there is no Evergreen School District Budget Crisis and therefore no need to cut 60 provisional Evergreen teachers and educators.
The School District has received enough funding to avoid cutting staff, and they have millions in reserves to cover the difference.
How do we know this? According to The Columbian, Mike Merlino, the new Evergreen School District superintendent, just received a 3-year contract with a base salary over $253,000, not including benefits.
The Evergreen School Board has made it clear: There is no budget crisis to be cutting staff, because they can afford to provide Superintendent Merlino $10,000 dollars more in salary than former Superintendent John Steach. Steach recently resigned in disgrace and received a severance package of over $301,000.
We have amazing educators who provide our students with the best education. I know, because I work with them.
In the midst of an educator shortage, and with the Vancouver and Evergreen School Districts representing 2 of our community’s top 5 employers, our city cannot afford to have living wage jobs lost.
I want to thank the Vancouver School District community for showing up and speaking their truth at Tuesday’s school board meeting. You spoke your truth about how losing counselors, teachers, media clerks, and programs would negatively impact your families. Our community is paying attention.
I’m Adam Aguilera, and I’m running for Vancouver City Council, Position 6. I will join with you to protect jobs in our community, while making sure a teacher’s voice is on the city council. One of the best economic investments a community can make is to ensure students receive a quality public education and stay local as a part of our innovative and growing local economy. Evergreen School District, take care of your people first, before you pay your leaders more.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
